$75M plan for  fiber internet breaks ground

More internet options are on the way to Georgetown. City officials are commemorating the installation of a new open-access fiber system during a groundbreaking ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at 1433 Cool Spring Way in Sun City.

The ceremonial event is hosted in partnership with Ubiquity, a private infrastructure investment firm dedicated to developing communications infrastructure throughout the country.

The company announced plans to invest $75 million toward establishing fiber connectivity throughout Georgetown in December of last year. Installing this new system — which will be open to local and national cable and internet providers, as well as 5G wireless cell sites — will grant residents access to a more diverse list of providers.

Mayor Josh Schroeder will be joined by Ubiquity leaders during the ceremony. Officials are expected to make brief comments outlining project details, timelines and future plans during the event.

The groundbreaking is open to the public.
