October 25, 1931-April 27, 2024: Fred was born in Booth, Texas. He graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&I University in Kingsville (Go Javelinas, “YEEE HOGS!” you would hear him yell from the stands), which became Texas A&M University. Here, he met the love of his life, Marian, and they were married the day after he graduated college and she graduated high school.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and served in Panama during the 1950s where he helped provide Panama’s first television broadcasts.

He was employed by Central Power and Light in Corpus Christi, Texas, for 33 years where he was a professional engineer and director of construction and transmission design. He made many lasting friendships with his fellow engineers who respected his management style and compassion. He had many hobbies and loved to tinker, fix, glue and build things. He built Tesla Coils, playhouses, jungle gyms, sailboats and more.

After his retirement from CP&L, he and Marian moved to Mercedes, Texas, to become Operations Manager for Magic Valley Cooperative for six years.  He was a Rotarian for Harlingen Rotary Club and member of St. Stevens Lutheran Church.

Fred retired to Corpus Christi in the 90s where he enjoyed volunteering for community service and playing golf.  He volunteered for Sea City Work Camp where he spent three weeks every summer for seven years instructing and helping high school students rebuild houses for those who could not afford it.  He was also the president of the Kiwanis of Corpus Christi and was honored with Kiwanis of the Year for leading the building of wheelchair ramps for those in need.  He volunteered at children’s hospitals as a clown in Clown Alley 23 with Clowns of America International. He was member of St. Marks Lutheran Church and Galilean Lutheran Church and played golf every chance he could.

In 2002, Fred and Marian moved to Sun City where he spent the happiest years volunteering for community service, traveling the world, playing golf, meeting new friends, entertaining on his back patio, Men’s Coffee, and Thursday Night Choir Practice (code name for Thursday Night Poker). He was a member of Georgetown Kiwanis, Christ Lutheran Church, Faith Lutheran Church and currently The Worship Place of Sun City.  He volunteered driving with Faith in Action for 15 years. He loved spending time in woodworking shop as a monitor or working with wood.  He built gameboards, inlaid wood boards, puzzles, cork boards, and even a 14 foot wood dining table for his daughter.

Fred was a Registered Professional Engineer, a Professional Land Surveyor and held a Real Estate License.

He is survived by his wife, Marian Grace (Doerfler) Youngs for four months shy of 70 years; his daughter, Deborah Russell and son-in law, Stan Russell of Port Townsend, Washington; daughter, Susan Youngs and son-in-law, David Newton of Rosharon, Texas; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Don and Pat Doerfler of Austin, Texas.

A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Saturday May 4 at The Worship Place 811 Sun City Blvd, Georgetown, Texas 78633
