Cities across the region are honoring and celebrating Juneteenth this week, leading up to the federal holiday June 19. Juneteenth marks the day that slaves were freed in Texas. Although the Emancipation Proclamation freeing the slaves was put into effect January 1, 1863, word did not reach Texas until more than two years later.
